Barnard introduced cardiopulmonary bypass (open-heart) surgery to Cape Town. Amongst Dr Barnard's awards are seventy-one fellowships, honorary degrees, awards and decorations from several countries. Another of Dr Barnard's great contributions to medicine is the development and introduction of the UCT mitral and aortic valve prostheses. This made the end to the use of valves that became diseased possible. Dr Barnard is world-renowned as the Dr to lead the team to perform the first human-to-human heart transplant. This took place at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town in December 1967. |
